Long-distance move from San Juan Capistrano, CA to Fort Collins, CO

Be wary of using this mover.

They say that it is easy to be excellent when everything is going well but the test of character is when there’s adversity. I am going to explain my experience with Nelson Moving starting with the bad. The very bad. We moved interstate from California. Mostly, the move went as expected. When our possessions arrived and we began to pack we began to notice the condition of the boxes. Almost all were crushed ranging from a little damage to seriously crushed. The real issue came when I started to unpack our Wardrobe boxes. We paid extra to get study Wardrobe boxes from U-Haul. We did this so our clothes including my wife’s wedding dress of 30 years ago would survive the move intact. The first box I opened I noticed all of my clothes were off the rack and were squished to the top. As I began to unpack I noticed there were other random boxes inside. At first, I was confused but as I continued I realized that they had opened my SEALED boxes by turning them UPSIDE down and shoving random boxes in. I presume they did this to save room on the truck. The boxes they chose were random and the first box I pulled out contained swim fins and camping coolers. Every one of our SEALED and SECURED Wardrobe boxes were treated like this. All of our clothes were severely wrinkled, including my wife’s wedding day dress which was a piled mess. In with our clothes was a dusty fan, garage tools and other items that should never have been placed with our clothes. Additionally, they were shoved in with such violence that it crushed the contents inside including a special lamp I had packed separately to avoid damage. It had been treated so violently that it was broken in half, another lamp had the push button broken off. To continue the mistreatment of our possessions we have a large Persian rug that they shove into a china hutch with such violence that it bulged the frame apart. Who does this?
The real issue though was the complete breach of trust. Having them open my sealed boxes and go through our personal items and then to treat our possessions with such a lack of respect and care. Anyone who is moving will understand this next breach. I discovered I had not packed a small coin collection. Time had run out and I decided to place it in the bottom of one of the Wardrobe boxes figuring it was sturdy and secure and no one would be going through it. Wrong, I found it opened and upside down. In fairness I did not notice anything missing but again a complete breach of trust. My wife’s costume jewelry box too was opened and the contents poured out within the box. Again, the real issue is needing the confidence that boxes you secure are not going to be opened and that your possessions will be treated carefully and with respect. Neither happened here.
At first, when I brought this to the attention of the company they were as shocked as I was on what had occurred. Then the true test of character showed through. They changed their position and told me that movers do that to save space in vehicles. REALLY?? They told me they had never heard of that when I first reported. No other mover I spoke to have heard of this practice. They offered me $100 dollars to compensate and avoid having to make a claim even though I told I wasn’t seeking anything I just wanted them to be aware and ensure it didn’t happen to someone else. The $100 dollars was insulting. Since they became strictly business I requested a small amount to dry clean and press all of our clothes that were crushed, reimbursement for Wardrobe boxes, the lamp, and wood repair for the hutch. I was informed that they couldn’t do that without a claim even though they already offered me money without a claim.
Bottom line is I don’t trust them, they handled and damaged our goods with willful disregard with moving practices well outside the established industry norm. This was not random damage that may occur. Instead of taking responsibility and resolving the issue they created they became all business. I have no confidence that items are missing that we are unaware of. I would not recommend this moving company.
