Long-distance move from Indianapolis, IN to Madison, WI

Unethical scam.

This was my family's first move to another state (Indiana to Wisconsin). I have moved countless friends and family members myself and really thought that was how we'd do it. But it became evident that we needed assistance. Plus, I was to receive financial help from the company that hired me!

We got sold and scammed. LDM came on very strong in their sales pitch, but seemed like the best "deal." Additionally, the salesman was not so much aggressive as persistent, which I took to be a positive sign.

My wife and spent quite a while inventorying our items and going over everything with a fine toothed comb with the salesman. He gave us a guaranteed maximum price over the phone and then sent a contract by email. The contract, of course was an ESTIMATE. I prodded and questioned and was assured that unless there was some "piano hidden somewhere that we forgot to mention" we'd be within our estimate and may come in under.

About a week out from our move date we were contacted by another moving company who was (apparently) affiliated/subcontracted by LDM. This mover said that the window for the move was about a week and a half. I mentioned quickly that we'd agreed upon a pick-up and drop-off date specifically. This person was very brusque and said she didn't think it "worked like that." I spent first half of that day calling LDM folks, never getting hold of the original salesman trying to find out why we'd not be moved on the dates specified. Eventually the gruff person from the other company called back and said, "Well I guess we'll see you one the date you specified. You must have important friends."

Meanwhile my wife called to ask me if we'd like to change our moving date because a company called (the same subcontractor) and asked if we could move about a week ahead of schedule to better fit there workload.

When the movers arrived (on the originally agreed upon date, but about 2 hours late) they were from a different company entirely and had very little information including an incomplete packing list and no schedule. I found out that they were affiliated with the subcontractor mentioned above. The were huffy from the off. Complaining about everything from the distance to the house from the street (about 30 feet), to the stairs (listed as 2-story), to the amount of stuff (admittedly not in their incorrect manifest). On and on, they were quite vocal about how "bullshit" everything was.

They also wondered why we hadn't packed anything. Of course everything we owned was in boxes ready to be taken out the door. What we were not informed about was "packing" the furniture. Wrapping blankets around everything and packing foam or taping drawers shut etc. Not having had a company handle it before, I had no idea it wasn't something they'd do as they packed the truck. We were, of course, informed that this would all be itemized on our invoice. I thought to myself, "How much could a few rolls of packing foam and a bunch of packing tape cost? Plus, they are the professionals packing the truck. Surely, they'd do a far better job than I would anyway. Probably worth a small increase to have peace of mind. What a nerve wracking day, though.

Two days later, we met the movers at our new home. Except they weren't the same people at all. Novice, here. Didn't know that they weren't the same crew, but it makes sense.

The day started with me being handed a new invoice with a grossly inflated cost several thousand dollars more than the "guaranteed maximum price." I called the salesman first. He referred me to the secondary company who actually accomplished the moving. Same gruff woman who had softened at first only to double down. She yelled over the phone threatening to "sue" over my "lies." Not sure at all what she was on about, but the result was that if I didn't pay, I didn't get my belongings. They'd be stored until litigation completed. Never thought I'd lose my entire household's worth of belongings in one fell swoop. I caved and paid.

This group was extremely efficient and much more careful and conscientious. Instead of only two people as with the loading, there were six! However, many of the items were damaged beyond repair and many more damaged but reparable during transit. So much for professional packing. I was told that the damaged items were reported to the companies insurance and I would be compensated for repairs. A report was given me with all of the damaged items on the (now complete manifest) circled with notes. I bought this group lunch and tipped big as they were apologetic and thorough and drew such a sharp contrast to the rest.

When I followed up with LDM and the original salesman about the damaged items, I was told that no one new such a person. Eventually, I found a direct line and NEVER got a call back. I tried about half-a-dozen times over the course of a few weeks. I though this salesman's persistence was a positive thing. Now he was persistently unavailable.

Long-distance move from Colorado to Washington

Liars.

These guys are full of empty promises!! They gave us a quote of $1800 to start with then called a few days before the move when we were outside the window to get our deposit back to tell us it would be more than $4000! We spoke with the manager about it and he promised $2200. We ended up paying $3200. Shady business for sure. They haven't tried to call me since I left a message the day of our move trying to talk to someone. This is not to mention some of the many other lies they told us. What happened to honesty and integrity?! A lot of our things were damaged and broken during the move as well.

Long-distance move from Florida to Illinois

Just them.

When it comes to relocation, there is only a single choice - Long Distance Movers. I prefer their services because they know how to treat customers. The last time I sought their services, the relocation turned out great. The entire experience was steamy and enjoyable. It was full of life and fast. I kept smiling throughout the relocation. When they were done, I gave each of them a tip. I felt amazing after the relocation services. For the first time, I had found movers who were capable of relocating me without any mistake being evident. It came to a very big surprise. My relocation was out of the ordinary. It ended up taking less time than I had scheduled. That makes me so much proud of this team.

Long-distance move from Sneads Ferry, NC to Portland, OR

This Broker Takes No Responsiblity.

Long distance movers took my money, but never took responsibility for the long distance trucking firm - ZMS Trucking out of Passaic, NJ ODOT 2815421(an INTRA state trucker who took my goods from NC to a warehouse in NJ) they brokered to who tried to extort an additional $1600 from me with falsified weight tickets (see pics) saying my load was 1400 pounds over my estimate. My stuff was picked up June 20 and I started asking for weight tickets a few days later..what is pictured is what they sent me July 27..and as you can see, there is no correlation between the ticket information on the first and second weight tickets, and the second ticket has been hand corrected and other info has been redacted by ZMS Trucking. Beware of false 5 star reviews!! Do not trust, nor place you faith or household goods with this company. You will be forever sorry and going out of your way to write negative reviews just like me. I eventually settled for paying $700+ extortion in order to get my stuff.
Filed a formal complaint with FMCSA.

Long-distance move from Arlington, VA to Houston, TX

Do Not Hire This Company.

I hired this company to move my things from Arlington, VA to Houston, TX following a career change. I had worked out the days that the items would be picked up and the days that the items would then be dropped off in Houston. I was flying there myself so I wanted to ensure that I would be there for the arrival of my belongings, and also make sure that I set my start date for work after I had my things. The day that my belongings were supposed to arrive I did not receive a phone call, so I contacted my driver with the number that I was given upon pick-up. When I called a man answered and responded with "hey baby". Regardless of if he had thought that I was someone else or not..this was an unknown number on his phone..and if you're a professional you may want to ensure that you know who you are talking to before saying things like this. He then proceeded to hand the phone to someone else who informed me that my belongings would not be arriving that day. So, I had asked when it was likely that I would receive these items. The response: "Not Sure. Maybe a week". Excuse me? They couldn't even tell me where the truck was. So here I am after moving halfway across the country by myself with none of my things and no idea when or if I may get them. FINALLY my items arrived..3 weeks after I had moved to Texas. The 1-year old Smart TV that I had paid to have them package was completely shattered..with no apologies, an entire box of my clothing had been soaking in what I really hope was water, old barn windows that I had were broken, one dresser has a 8 inch long scratch down the side, multiple pictures had their frames broken and one painting, done by my grandfather, had the frame broken and was so water saturated that it had to be thrown out. When I called them and also submitted claims regarding the damages I had received an offer of $35. $35!! This was by far the most unprofessional, unacceptable, and despicable moving company that I have ever heard of. PLEASE save yourself the trouble and hire seriously anyone else..or even better..move yourself and save yourself the frustration, damages, and money.

Long-distance move from Marion, OH to Surprise, AZ

Shady Business.

This was the worst experience I’ve ever endured conducting business with any company. These people are here to take your money and destroy and lose your belongings. They say what you want to hear at the beginning and make it seem very personable but once you’ve invested your initial payment it goes down hill from there. They quoted me $2,000 less than what I had to pay to just get the stuff they didn’t destroy or lose back. They do not hold themselves responsible for lost or damaged goods so you are out of luck with the stuff you worked hard to pay for. I feel cheated and robbed by these people. Never again will I use them I wish I could give them zero stars.

Long-distance move from Louisville, KY to Berkeley, CA

Negligent, Disrespectful Liars.

I wish I could give 0 stars.

Recently, I used the broker company Long Distance Movers to move my belongings from Louisville, KY to Berkeley, CA. For at least part of the shipping, they used Encore Moving and Storage. I have been in contact with them to let them know what a horrible mistake it is to ever do business with Encore, and to file claims for damages to my property. Not only did they charge me excessive fees that were not part of the original moving estimate, ($350 to shuttle my belongings to my apartment, another $100 because of a "walking fee") and not only did they deliver my stuff well after 9:00 PM on a weekday WELL after the 7-10 days they estimated, but they did so before even showing me the terrible condition of my belongings.

This is not the "normal" or "reasonable" damage one may encounter in a cross-country move. The damage to these boxes was, at the very least, totally negligent, and at most, intentionally criminal. I say this, because the deliverer who dropped these unacceptably damaged boxes off at my apartment actually attempted to buy one of my books from me; this, to me, is a clear indication that the deliverers were rummaging through my belongings. Obviously, this is a total invasion of my privacy and my property. At least one large item, a piano bench, is totally missing. I am absolutely disgusted. I am contemplating contacting a lawyer, and/or the police.

Long Distance Movers should never have associated with this moving company; I had no say in which companies they decided to use. Anyone with an internet connection can see the abysmal reviews on Yelp, on MyMovingReviews, and the Better Business Bureau.

Of the things damaged in my move:

1. Priceless family heirlooms, dishes that belonged to my grandmother's grandmother.
2. Art work and picture frames
3. over a hundred books
4. collectible comic books
5. kitchen appliances, including a food processor
6. a printer
7. a piano bench is totally missing
8. Business suits and dress clothes

The only response so far is a complete diversion of responsibility, other than saying I can file claims for damages ($0.60 per pound per dollar). Do not EVER use this moving company, unless you want your property completely destroyed and disrespected. Clearly, this moving company has no business handling anyone's property. They are negligent criminals, or at least do business with them.

Long-distance move from Macomb, MI to Cape Coral, FL

Bait and switch.

Long distance movers llc deserves 0 starts

I contacted them to move from Michigan to Florida for $1500. They said price would not move. 3 days before moving they increased the price to $2500. Also they told us we would only be able to take 1/2 the stuff we told them we planned to take. I couldn’t back out because they had my $1000 deposit. I dreadfully agreed because we were stuck. The day of their appointment they said it would be between 8am to noon. 5pm came and they finally answered our call to let us know they could be there at 9pm. We told them to forget it and were only able to recoup $400 of the $1000 we gave them.

Stay away and save your money.

Long-distance move from Falls Church, VA to Schaumburg, IL

Got cheated very badly.

This is my first move across state. I was moving from Washington DC to Chicago. The quote given to me was 1500 for door to door move with tax, labor fuel charges. But when they came for move they told they need extra 300 + 75 + 120 + 75 ( for moving to Chicago, as the truck will not fit , they told + 75 feet away from door + extra packaging). But the same truck which took our stuff came and delivered to our doorsteps. Not sure then why was the extra 300 taken. also a proper receipt was not provided.

Move size: 1 Bedroom Home Service cost: $2100

Official company response

Rukkunudeen, we are sorry to hear you did not understand charges provided by our movers to you. We will have someone from our customer service department call you,to help you understand all the charges you received, the basic charges are listed on your estimates front page where it says understanding your estimate which breaks down all these prices you have listed.

We would like to help you however understand some of these charges and see if we can offer you some type of discount for the misunderstanding.

Long-distance move from Portland, OR to San Diego, CA

False Promises.

I went with Long Distance Movers because I was directly told that they did not use distributors and delivered shipments directly to the relocation address. This is false. Also, I was told that it would be no more than 3-7 business days total for delivery, but most likely will get to the new location within 5 business days. This is false as well. I'm currently at business day number 5 and just got off of the phone with a rep from Long Distance. They called the dispatcher at the distributor and they stated they will not be leaving for another 3 business days. By the time the shipment leaves (if they do leave as stated) we will be sitting at 8 business days for a trip from Portland, OR to San Diego, CA. If I would have known that this was possible I would have went with another company. I'm currently sitting in San Diego waiting for my shipment because I decided to come down early and get situated in my new residence (internet, cable, etc.) assuming the information provided to me was accurate. Also, I had to call for 3 days straight to get an answer about my shipment. If I would have received an answer the first time I would have waited to drive down to San Diego and enjoyed Portland, OR a little longer. Overall, initial customer service and pickup was great, but since they left with my shipment it has not been great and very little communication on their part. I'd recommend doing a deep dive into moving companies before going with one especially this company.
