The Moving Industry is one of the significant businesses in the USA. The average American moves quite a few times in a lifetime. Claimed to be the third most stressful event one could possibly endure, after death in the family and divorce, moving continues to be on of the top endeavors Americans go through. Despite the efforts and the financial pitfalls, chances are Americans will keep moving.
This time we got some interesting stats and trends coming straight from our system. However, some of the numbers come from the U.S. Census Bureau and Wikipedia so we can complete the picture. What kind of moves did Americans make – local or interstate? Which was the busiest day for movers? Learn the answers of those questions and some more:

The Year 2013 in Review – Moving Stats and Trends
- 12.5% Americans relocated during the year 2013.
- Most wanted city was the New York City and the top destination state was California.
- Most of the moves were interstate. In fact, 2/3 of the moves were interstate.
- 1 and 2-bedroom dwellers moved the most.
- Friday and Saturday were the most preferred time to move. Sunday and Tuesday were the least preferred days to move.
- August, 1st was the busiest day for movers. 1.23% of all moved happened on that day. The next busiest days were June 1st and July 1st.
- Nearly 40% of the moves were performed during summer. I guess hot weather and bad traffic couldn’t stop movers. June, July and August were the busiest months in the moving business.
Most of the data for this data visualization is based on 62,016 estimate request made on our website, but we’ve also used some info from the Census site and Wikipedia to complete the statistics.
Great statistics! It is nice to see that California was a top destination in 2013. We have transported many vehicles in the last months from all over the states to California. So, we can kind of confirm this fact that a lot of people are in fact moving to California. It is interesting though to learn that New York was a top city. Thanks!
