Wrong information / extra costs
I recently moved with Allied Pickfords from Dubai to Thailand. Having selected a leading international moving company with offices in both countries, surely made my comfortable that all would be perfect. (against using a low cost local mover with no office in Thailand). Having followed all disclaimers and accepting all instructions of restriction, guidelines for the move, I felt very comfortable this was a great company. The removing of good went perfect and information about shipment was great. The confusion started after arriving in the destination (Bangkok) having to give the family passports in custody for clearance of our personal goods. The shipment was on my name and It was clearly mentioned in all documentation that only me needed to have my work permit to clear the goods which was all done. When asking why the family passport was needed to clear a container on my name, I was told for a 40 foot container, Thai customs requires all family passports to import this quantity of goods (40' container). If not, the excess goods (no guidelines of max) would be subject to custom duty, a habit which was applied to many people/foreigners arriving in thailand. When rejecting the approx. 900 USD discretionary fee (alledgedly duty but no documentation), I asked why the correct paperwork had not been asked if this issue with Customs in Thailand was known. This could be avoided and I was not willing to pay 900 USD for this miscommunication. After obtaining the necessary document/ passport stamps for my family , the shipment was finally accepted with no customs duty. However, I was charged 235 USD for 8 days storage (235 USD) which was caused by the moving company internal procedures of not communication properly of the country specifics and what documents are needed to import personal shipment. I would like to warn fellow movers with Allied Pickfords (especially to Thailand) that one needs to make sure that the company communicates properly about what is needed as documentation. I do not know if I would have paid this 900 USD who would be the final recipient but for sure I do not accept that mis-communication within the company resulted in me paying extra costs.
